CLINICAL ACTIVITY

Our Unit covers many areas in pulmonary medicine including obstructive diseases (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease/emphysema, asthma, cystic fibrosis), lung cancer, airway infections, interstitial lung diseases, pulmonary vascular diseases and respiratory failure. Our clinical activities encompass a medical ward service, a day hospital, general and specialized respiratory outpatient clinics and a respiratory endoscopy service. The ward is dedicated to acute patients coming from the emergency department and to patients admitted on a programmed basis for elective diagnostic/therapeutic workout. Specialized respiratory outpatient clinics are dedicated to neoplastic diseases, asthma, COPD, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, sarcoidosis and cystic fibrosis. The respiratory endoscopy performs diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, unique in the region, for neoplastic and inflammatory conditions. The day hospital, tightly connected to respiratory endoscopy, ensures both pre-operative assessment and monitoring of patients undergoing invasive diagnostic investigations, avoiding prolonged hospitalization. One of the main activities is the lung transplantation program, providing both candidate selection and follow-up. Recently, in partnership with the Infective Disease Unit, a follow-up service dedicated to COVID-19 patients was activated.

Main surgical services:

The respiratory endoscopy is specialized in new techniques of interventional pulmonology for the diagnosis and therapy of airway and pleural disease. Handled procedures include bronchial, transbronchial and US-guided biopsies, medical thoracoscopy, laser-therapy, endoscopic lung volume reduction.

Certifications:

The Respiratory Medicine Unit is part of the European reference network (ERN)-LUNG (rare pulmonary disease network). The respiratory endoscopy is the referral center of the Veneto region for endoscopic lung reduction by endobronchial valves.
